IMG Friendly Surgery Programs?! The IMG List: General Surgery

Which programs are IMG friendly in General Surgery? Which Surgery programs accept IMGS?

The IMG List 📰 is a huge testimony to the great achievements of international medical graduates (IMGs) 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ in General Surgery.

Every line of this list is a story of success 🎓, a story of hard work and determination that will shine 🔥 the path for dreamers around the world trying to achieve their goals.

Initially, I was planning to call this list ‘IMG friendly residency programs’. However, as evident by this extensive list, there are IMGs in the majority of US residency programs, even the top Ivy League programs. I, therefore, did not want to limit IMGs to certain programs so-called ‘IMG friendly’. Even the ‘non-IMG friendly programs or specialties’ (often debated when discussing the best IMG specialty options) accept IMGs each year that fit their selection criteria. So, if you have the credentials, do not let anyone tell you that you should only apply to certain programs.

🔎 Find the Residency Programs that Match Your Application!

Overview

The list has over 300 general surgery programs and will continue to grow. Each program starts with the name and the program code then the program address, program director name, contact email, current IMGs in the program and which school and countries they come from. Finally, information related to US clinical experience (USCE), USMLE exams and cut-offs, visa, and year of graduation (YOG) is available if provided by the website in addition to a link to each of the program websites.

For those applying to the MATCH®, you can use this list to assess whether programs have taken IMGs from your school or your country in addition to assessing the criteria available by the program. We understand that so many other factors play a role in residents’ selection, but this is just to provide you with a quick overview of current IMGs in these programs.

As with any work done by humans, there is a potential for error. If you find any mistakes in this list, please let us know through the comments or the contact us page and we will try to fix them as soon as possible.

If you need any help with your USMLE preparation, personal statement, CV editing, interview preparation, residency or research advising, make sure to check out our services here.

USMLE: All applicants must have passed both Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE. (It is required that PGY1-level residents register for Step 3 before being promoted to the PGY2 level of training).
