How USMLE Step 2 CK Has Changed (2020–2026)
Step 2 CK has shifted significantly in the last few years:
- Programs depend on it much more after Step 1 became pass/fail
- Questions focus on clinical reasoning and “next best step” management
- Ethics, patient safety, QI, and biostatistics appear more frequently
- Vignettes are longer and more integrated across systems
- Memorization is less important compared to logical prioritization
Because of these changes, passive studying (videos, long reading) is inefficient. Step 2 CK rewards active learning, especially through question banks.
UWorld — The Core of USMLE Step 2 CK Preparation
What Is UWorld?
UWorld is a large, exam-style question bank (~4,000 questions) built to mimic real Step 2 CK clinical scenarios. Blocks contain 40 questions, just like the real exam, and explanations teach both diagnosis and management.
Do You Need UWorld?
Yes. UWorld is the single most important resource for Step 2 CK.
How to Use UWorld Properly
Complete questions in timed, non-tutored mode to build real-exam endurance.
Aim for 40–80 questions/day depending on your schedule.
The real value is in the review:
- Understand why the correct answer is right and why the other options are wrong.
- Try to mentally “teach back” the explanation — if you can restate it clearly, you understood it.
- Keep your notes extremely short (one line per idea). Long notes accumulate quickly and are rarely reviewed.
- Flag questions you guessed or found confusing, then revisit them intentionally.
- Mastering your first UWorld pass extremely well is the strongest predictor of Step 2 CK success.
For more information about how to study UWorld, check out our UWorld Blog.
The Match Guy High-Yield Notes
TMG High-Yield Notes are concise, exam-focused summaries created and peer-reviewed by physicians who scored 260–279+.
These free, high-yield notes are perfect for supplementing your Qbank practice. They are organized in Q&A format, which encourages active learning and better retention.
The files include:
- Most commonly tested STEP 2 CK concepts.
- Focuses only on high-yield concepts helping you to focus on what really matters.
- Includes Anki Flashcards of the questions. l You can download these files for free HERE.
How to use them:
- Review the relevant topic before or after solving a UWorld block.
- Use at beginning of your studying to know what is important to focus on and during last 2 weeks for final review.
- Watch the video lessons that go with these files. They are part of a 7-day high-yield live bootcamp. You can check it out HERE.

CMS Forms — What They Are & How to Use Them Correctly
What Are CMS Forms?
CMS (Clinical Mastery Series) forms are 50-question mini-exams created by NBME. They were originally designed for shelf exams, but they still reflect NBME logic used on Step 2 CK.
Do You Need CMS Forms?
They are optional but useful for system-specific reinforcement. They are not readiness assessments.
How to Use CMS Forms
CMS works best for reviewing:
- Neurology
- OB/GYN
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine systems
They help strengthen NBME-style reasoning and identify weak areas.
When NOT to Use CMS
CMS scores can be misleading because forms vary in difficulty (too easy or too outdated).
Use them only as practice, never to judge readiness.
AMBOSS — What It Is, Whether You Need It, and When to Use It
What Is AMBOSS?
AMBOSS is a comprehensive medical learning platform combining:
- A USMLE-style Qbank
- A vast library of “learning cards”
- Algorithm diagrams
- Integrated search with high-yield highlighting (“key symptoms,” “key findings”)
- Curated study plans for ethics, biostatistics, patient safety, and QI
It is known for clear explanations and practical management algorithms.
Do You Need AMBOSS? (Short Answer: No)
Most students do not need AMBOSS to reach their target score.
It should not replace UWorld and should not be used as your first Qbank.
Not sure whether UWorld or AMBOSS is the better Qbank for you? Read our full comparison on our blog UWorld Vs. AMBOSS.
When to Use AMBOSS
Use AMBOSS only after finishing UWorld and only if:
- NBMEs/UWSAs show weak areas
- Certain topics still feel unclear
- You need targeted reinforcement
AMBOSS is particularly strong for:
- Ethics
- Biostatistics
- Quality Improvement
- Patient Safety
- Management algorithms (shock, chest pain, thyroid, OB hemorrhage, etc.)
High-Yield AMBOSS Plans
Three study plans are especially helpful:
- Patient Safety & QI Plan
- Biostatistics Plan
- Ethics Plan
Each plan guides you through short learning cards followed by linked questions, reinforcing NBME logic.
You do not need to read AMBOSS in full—only target weak areas.
UWorld Step 3 — Optional and Targeted Only
What Is It?
UWorld Step 3 is a question bank for the Step 3 exam. Some of its conceptual topics overlap strongly with Step 2 CK.
When It Helps
After mastering Step 2 UWorld, Step 3 can strengthen:
- Biostatistics
- Research interpretation
- Ethics
- Patient safety
- Quality improvement
These topics are tested heavily on Step 2 CK.

When to Avoid USMLE Step 3
Do not use it for:
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology
- Nephrology
- Pulmonology
- Critical care
These questions are too advanced and can overwhelm students.
Biostatistics Course for USMLE STEP 2 CK
Since biostatistics can be challenging to learn through reading alone, this course uses an interactive video format to simplify complex topics. It guides you through practice questions, explains both correct and incorrect answer choices, and helps you decode tricky abstracts and pharmaceutical ads frequently seen on the exam. Not a mandatory resource, but helpful if you are having any difficulty understanding biostatistics.
Crush the Biostatistics of USMLE STEP 1, STEP 2 CK, and STEP 3 exams

Assessments (NBMEs & UWSAs)
Although self-assessments are primarily tools to evaluate your progress rather than traditional study resources, they can still be incredibly valuable for learning. These exams are written in a style very similar to the real Step 2, often by the same test authors, which means both the question design and the concepts tested mirror what you’ll see on the actual exam.
After completing a self-assessment under exam-like, timed conditions, the real learning comes from your review. If you got a question right and understood the reasoning — perfect. If you missed it or were unsure how you arrived at the answer, take time to dig into the concept behind it. This process is one of the strongest ways to reinforce knowledge and identify weaknesses.
For NBMEs, where explanations are not provided, you may need supplemental help to break down questions and reasoning. Tools like ChatGPT can help you analyze questions and explore why the correct answer is correct, but you can also seek guidance from tutors if you need deeper clarity. This same approach applies to UW self-assessments, use them not just to test yourself, but to learn from every question.
Using ChatGPT the Right Way
ChatGPT is extremely helpful when used with precise prompts.
Useful prompts include:
- “Explain this Step 2 CK question step-by-step.”
- “Why is each wrong option wrong?”
- “Summarize management of ___ in 5–7 lines.”
- “Break down this NBME question logically.”
Do not use ChatGPT as a Qbank or for score prediction.
Use it to clarify reasoning, not replace practice.
Anki — What It Is and How to Use It Correctly
What Is Anki?
Anki is a spaced-repetition flashcard program that improves long-term memory. It is extremely effective when used selectively — but overwhelming when misused.
How to Use Anki for Step 2 CK
Use Anki only for:
- UWorld incorrects
- NBME/UWSA mistakes
- Psych criteria
- OB vaccines
- Pediatrics milestones
- Pharmacology
- Biostatistics formulas
Consider making your own decks. Avoid large decks unrelated to your mistakes.
Minimalist Resource List for USMLE Step 2CK (All You Need)
- UWorld (primary Qbank and core learning tool)
- TMG Notes (complementary reinforcement)
- AMBOSS (targeted gaps only, after UWorld)
- Anki (mistakes only)
- NBME/UWSA (readiness checks only)
- CMS Forms (system review only)
This resource set is sufficient for almost every student.

Resources You Don’t Need for USMLE Step 2 CK (But You Will Hear About Them)
A common mistake among Step 2 CK students is assuming that every resource mentioned online must be part of their study plan. In reality, most students only need UWorld, TMG Notes, targeted AMBOSS, and a small amount of Anki. The resources below are widely known, but they are not essential for Step 2 CK success. This section explains what each resource actually is and why it isn’t required, without dismissing them unfairly.
Divine Intervention (Podcast + Notes)
Divine Intervention is a large collection of high-yield audio reviews and PDFs covering Step 2 CK topics. It can be helpful for reinforcing ethics, biostatistics, and OB/GYN while commuting or during passive review. However, it is not structured as a primary study tool and doesn’t follow a systematic progression. Most students find that UWorld already teaches these topics more directly and efficiently. Divine Intervention remains optional for targeted reinforcement, not a core resource.
OnlineMedEd (OME)
OnlineMedEd is a video-based curriculum that explains clinical reasoning in a simplified, stepwise format. It is useful for students who feel very lost at the beginning of clerkships or who need a gentle introduction to clinical medicine. But for Step 2 CK dedicated study, OME becomes too slow and lacks NBME-style depth. Once you begin UWorld, these videos offer diminishing returns. They are optional for early learners, not necessary for exam-ready students.
Boards & Beyond (B&B)
Boards & Beyond provides video lectures originally designed for Step 1, with some expansion into clinical material. It is strong at connecting mechanisms with disease processes, but it is too time-consuming for most Step 2 CK preparation. You can supplement your UWorld studying with The Match Guy 7-day Step 2 live boot camp which is more concise and only focuses on the high-yield concepts.
B&B may help students with significant foundational gaps, but it is not required for the typical Step 2 CK student.
Emma Holliday Reviews
Emma Holliday’s free shelf-review videos offer a quick, high-yield summary of core clerkship topics. They are useful for medical students preparing for shelf exams or for a brief refresher close to Step 2 CK test day. However, the content is too superficial to replace UWorld or NBME-style practice. These videos are optional for light review—not part of the main study strategy.
Sketchy (Sketchy Medical)
Sketchy uses illustrated stories and character-based memory cues to teach microbiology, pharmacology, and selected clinical topics. It is excellent for long-term retention of antibiotics, pathogens, and HIV treatments. However, Sketchy is not built for Step 2 CK’s level of clinical reasoning and is far too slow for dedicated study. It is optional for students who struggle specifically with micro or pharm memorization, but unnecessary for most.
Kaplan Step 2 CK Books & Videos
Kaplan provides a full curriculum with lengthy textbooks and video lectures. While thorough, these materials are extremely time-consuming and not aligned with the streamlined, question-based approach modern Step 2 CK requires. Students preparing in a standard 4–12 week dedicated period cannot realistically finish Kaplan alongside UWorld. It may help students with major knowledge gaps or long academic breaks, but it is not required for Step 2 CK success today.
AMBOSS Full Articles (Library Mode)
AMBOSS contains an enormous library covering almost every medical condition. While the platform is excellent, reading full AMBOSS articles is rarely efficient. Most pages are too detailed, too long, and not exam-focused. The best way to use AMBOSS is to follow the curated study plans for ethics, QI, biostatistics, and patient safety—not to read the entire library. AMBOSS is powerful when used selectively, but unnecessary as a full reading resource.
FAQs
How should I start Step 2 CK prep?
Start with a question bank like UWorld. If having difficulty starting with a question bank, start with The Match Guy 7-day Step 2 live boot camp that will introduce you to all high-yield concepts before you dive into a question bank.
Do I need a second UWorld pass?
Usually no — a deeply mastered first pass is far more effective. But review your notes.
Are videos like OME or B&B required?
If your base isn’t strong, video learning can make a huge difference. Our High-Yield 7-Day Bootcamp is designed exactly for that, short, focused, live sessions that cover only what’s truly tested. You’ll also have access to all recordings, even if you miss a day. And best of all, you can try it risk-free with a full money-back guarantee.
When should I delay my exam?
If your last assessments show you’re below your target and not improving. To know how much you need to score, check our blog “average Step 2 CK scores by specialty”.
Do CMS scores matter?
No. Use CMS for system practice only.
Three-Line Summary
Conclusion
Step 2 CK preparation doesn’t need complexity. By focusing on UWorld, reinforcing essential concepts, using assessments to track readiness, and keeping your resource list minimal, you can reach your target score efficiently. Simple, structured strategies remain the most reliable path to a strong Step 2 CK performance and a competitive Match outcome.
